What Did You Get In Your “Mystery Box” Or “Bag Of Crap”?

by Sheldon Nesdale on 2 March 2010

Last year I paid $10 for a bag of crap and got a 4 point powerboard and a 24pack of Twix bars. Not bad.

Very very fun and exciting opening it infront of my workmates to see what I had bought.

What did you get in your bag of crap or "mystery box"?

I’ve been a lurker here for quite a while….but love this site!
Thank you for putting it together Sheldon and I check in every day :)

Anyways, in my bag of crap I received a box of 24 golfballs.
No one I know plays golf, but I guess it’s a bit better than some of the *crap* that some have received, lol!

I still haven’t got my bag of crap. Got lost in the post and they are still trying to track it down. Might be better off with my 11 buck refund by the sounds of it.

My partner and I both did the bag of crap. I got the lavender gift pack, which is quite handy as I go thru bucket loads of moisteriser with my swim teaching job. My partner got a meccano set, which even though he is 29 absolutely loved doing with our miss 4. Not too bad, guess we got better crap then others haha

I got 3 packages and my girlfriend got 1. I got What look like Gloves for welding or some other job that needs very heavy duty gloves, meccarno plane and some race car track + cars included. My girlfriend got some basic non branded sunglasses the kind you can get for $5-$10 from anywhere. Kind of a rip off for $17. At least the meccarno is probably worth it. Think I will aviod them from 1day and maybe just give some of the others a chance.

Hear about the guy who got a Plasma TV?

I bet he was pretty happy with that for $17.

Anyone care to say who they would vote as best website for mystery boxes? Dont think id do one with 1-day again but daysale have it today and im very tempted (although they have made my choice harder by having 4 different sizes)

Belinda April 29, 2010 at 2:11 pm

got one off daysale on Monday for my 6mth daughter (o-5 age group) got a hamilton v8 book, dust pan, cheap manicure set,a very small avon hand cream, and some cheap body lotion for $29.95 on the same day I got abit excited and also got a lucky shot box off 6shooter the same type of thing just more of it for $59.95 would never buy again

Hmmm it seems that a $10 or $20 mystery box or bag of crap is just a bit of fun. If you get something worth less it’s bad luck and a good laugh with your mates.

But when you pay $60 you expect something decent, worth at least that or you feel very ripped off.

Good advice for the One Day Sale websites I reckon. Thanks Belinda.

Hi Belinda,
I am sorry to hear that you have had a bad experience when you ordered from us. The total retail value of what you received was approximatly $69.00, so dollar for dollar, you did alright. However, we are going to send you out a little something extra for your daugther, as it appears there may have been an error, in that your 0-5 selection did not appear on your order sheet. We pride ourselve on customer service and we like to try and put things right where we can. Thanks, The Daysale Team

Belinda April 29, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I wouldn’t say it was a bad experience just not what i expected I do love your site and the amazing deals but think ill just stick to buying the things that I know what im getting and giving the mystery boxes, lucky shots ect…a miss.
Thanks, Bindy

I got a crappy massage ball shaped thing. Made me angry as it was meant to be something they would sell for $10 normally,… no one in their right mind would pay for $2 shop junk like that :( Will never buy again.

To top it off the stupid thing didnt even come with batteries even though the box clearly stated otherwise.

Reply

Sheldon Nesdale April 29, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Oh man, “batteries included” message on the box when they aren’t, really is an extra kick in the guts Anna.

Hi, done a few of these. Got a Samsung Computer Mouse of Off The Back once which was good as needed a new one. Got a jockey singlet off DaySale. A cake stand platter thing another time. Just enjoy the surprise of it and I guess can always sell or give away as they say

I did my first mystery bag yesterday, and i got something i can’t even describe, its a black canvas sheet about 12″ by 7″ with handles in the front side ad on the sides a big round elastic hoop and small red hoop elastic inside, its the same the other side. i thought it was a tool to help you put a disabled dog into a bath like a harness? havent got a clue, so other 1-day the product back as its utter useless, though did get a bag of ballons, which only be the size of water bombs, great for winter time…… i can see a cold coming on….

Sheldon Nesdale June 4, 2010 at 9:02 pm

@Alex Bahahaha! Hilarious!

Is your mystery canvas thing and out door bean bag? My mate got something similar and thats what it turned out to be

Reply

Sheldon Nesdale July 9, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Is that the one that costs about $100 to fill with beans?

Jayne June 9, 2010 at 11:01 am

I received my first (and last!) mystery bag today. Although not bad quality…. I got an apron, and a straining pad – am I supposed to be stuck in a kitchen or something??????? Are they sexist? Would that have been in a mans pack??

Reply

Sheldon Nesdale June 9, 2010 at 11:33 am

In a mans pack I would expect beer, sports magazines and some tools. I don’t know what a straining pad is but I’d prefer your pack!

Ages ago both myself and partner got shoes off the 1day mystery site, of course they are the wrong size, come on 1day I know you need to clear out your warehouse but…
Recently got a 4 port USB hub from offtheback, and I thought what on earth am I going to use this for!~ I now work at home, and use my computer more productivly, and it has actually come in handy :-)

Reply

Sheldon Nesdale June 10, 2010 at 10:51 am

Wrong size shoes? That would be very annoying. The chance of liking a mystery box / bag of crap is about 50/50, but the chance of getting a pair of shoes in the right size must be 1/12? Not good odds at all.

Reply

claudine June 23, 2010 at 11:28 am

especially when you’re a female with size 11 feet, chances are one in a million that they’d be the right size!

Kellie June 19, 2010 at 10:18 am

I recently got the kids mystery lucky dip from 3deals hoping to get something for my wee man (nearly 2) ended up getting “flip it” a fast action foot game for 8 years+ which wasn’t ideal but the luck of the draw so gave it away to a 9 yr old (and it happened to be still to hard for her!!) anyway just yesterday recieved my second ever mystery deal this time from daysale and what do you know i got the SAME thing!!!! what are the chances,? the same product from different sites ! ? Not going to bother giving it away this time the puppy might enjoy chewing it… !

Sheldon Nesdale June 19, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Brought my 11yr old son a t shirt off 3 deals they were advertising different brands like DC,Fallen and other brands and they randomly pick for you so I purchased two.Today they arrived not impressed with them at all he will not wear a t shirt saying AIRPORT SECURITY STRIP SEARCH DEPARTMENT NEW ZEALAND what idiot would wear this let alone put it on their child.

Reply

Rachel June 21, 2010 at 2:21 pm

The other tshirts says DON’T ACT LIKE YOU’RE NOT IMPRESSED hello 3deals is this a joke!!!

Reply

Sheldon Nesdale June 21, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I guess those were the T-shirts they had trouble selling so the only way they could get rid of them was in a mystery bag?

Reply

Debbi June 28, 2010 at 10:47 am

Have ordered my mystery bag, should arrive this Thursday.
I am loving all your posts this looks like fun.
Will I be dissapointed or will I be one of those very lucky people who win an ipod but just don’t mention it!!! (come on guys give us some hope and let us know!)…..

Don’t you worry if I get something big everyone will know!!!

Well for a brief moment there I too experienced the excitment of Christmas morning…. ok so my courier package wasn’t the size of the entertainment system but it looked about right for a camera or ipod, but alas I now am the not so proud owner of an asortment of Chinese made balsamic vinegars and salt!!!! ….anyone wanna swap? Quite like the sound of the mysterious grey thingy!!!!hehe .
Did anyone get the big prizes???
Just a pointer to these website and their bag of craps, I wouldn’t feel so ripped of if you said that a portion of the sales goes to a charity, then it would feel like buying a raffle ticket that is guarateed to give a prize…. Just a thought….

Reply

Sheldon Nesdale June 30, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Oooo that is a cool idea Debbi!

Jayne June 30, 2010 at 9:56 am

Now I know I said I wasn’t going to get another “Mystery”, but I decided to try the Off the Back ones. I have dealt many a time with them as I do photography and they have good stuff.
However, I ordered 2 x $10 bags. This morning I received only one bag and in it was a kitchen magician (peeler), with the PEELER MISSING!!!! only the little accessory was in the package.
Currently waiting for their response……..

I have had decent stuff from 1-day in these but I got one from another site (can’t remember which one, I could select what age group etc it was for, selected Male and appropriate age group) and I got some company promotional drink bottle that businesses get done and give away to clients etc and a womens book :-/ Could still give them away to family etc so was all good but was pretty annoyed at the time.

Did the same thing with the 3 deals t-shirts – also got the Airport Security Strip Search Department, as well as one about the Kiwi league team. They’re okay as ’round the house’ t-shirts, or the strip search t-shirt is a bed shirt for my partner.

Disappointed tho, as they were advertising DC shirts, along with numerous other label t-shirts – these are NOT label shirts. False advertising anyone?
